From Telegraph To Telephone – The Isle of Man talks to the world
On the 24th May, 1844, the American portrait painter and inventor Samuel Finley Breese Morse took his place in history as the first person in the world to send a telegraph message between two centres of commerce. Thirty-two years later, a young Scottish immigrant by the name of Alexander Graham Bell did even better when he announced to the world that he had invented a superior form of communication that would alter the course of the world forever. How the applicability of electricity to the communication of intelligence developed and how it transformed Manx society is not a story to be told in a few words. It is an unlikely story of how two iconic nineteenth century inventions became the twenty-first century’s most important engine of advancement.
