Asila’s Song by Jackie Morrey-Grace
Asila’s Song is a 23 minute, 1 act play for 1, in verse. In it, our main proponent – a ghost, conspires to haunt to death her ex-lover whose cruel disregard, we quickly come to learn, has driven her to a tragic and untimely end. However, our ghost finds herself hindered in her efforts by her own haunting. This comes in the form of an angel, Asila, who calls to her constantly to find it in herself to forgive her ex so her soul might be released to return to her bones. These rest at the bottom of the sea.
In this classic battle between light and dark, the outcome of our story hinges on our ghost’s discovery of a broken mirror – a metaphor for her shattered sense of self at the hands of her ex. When peering in, she finds her reflection to be identical to that of her angel, Asila. For the story to end, she must interpret what this means and how to piece herself together again – but who will win – angel or ghost? Indeed, will there be any winners at all?
