Hanks - On my knees by Roy Hanks
Published October 2023
'Through adversity I found strength' was the Hanks team motto. It was entirely apt for a man who won the TT at his 59th attempt. Most would have given up long ago. Not Roy Hanks
Racer, motorcycle dealer, sports administrator, publisher and grandee of one of British motorsport's greatest racing dynasties, Roy Hanks has done it all. So too did his father, brothers and sisters, nephew, niece, daughter and now granddaughter. All in black and orange
On my knees is Roy Hanks' story. It is his family's story too and a personal insight into sixty years in the motorcycle trade. Uniquely it also traces the development of sidecar racing over the same period. From the big-wheelers of the 1950s through to the sidecar outfits of the present day. All through the eyes of a competitor and legend, who raced them.
Birmingham born and bred Roy Hanks has been the face of Erdington's Fred Hanks Motorcycles since the 1970s. Behind the scenes he was also active within the Auto Cycle Union - motorcycle sport's governing body - and was made a Director of the ACU in 1997. A position he still holds
He is best known for his exploits on the track however, racing without break from 1960 to 2016. Roy remains the youngest person ever to have competed at the Isle of Man TT races and has been at the sharp-end of sidecar racing since forever. His achievements are too long to list, but they include both overall and outright wins in the sidecar TT and a British Sidecar Championship
